LEARNING IN AND THROUGH ART - NOV. 28, 2020

This workshop identified varying challenges and perspectives towards art education. Through hands-on activities, we touched upon the existing problematic approaches in teaching art in the classroom and explored a more robust teaching methodology in the visual arts. We were joined by Nisha Nair,  Founder/Executive Director, ArtSparks Foundation & Author of the book Art Sparks: Ideas. Methods. Process., published by Tara Books. She discussed a few concepts conveyed through the book including the value of  process-oriented approach in teaching visual art to develop 21st century learning & life skills in children.

In the workshop, the participants were asked to reimagine or combine everyday objects and come up with their own new and unique combined or reimagined objects.

For those who missed the workshop, you can watch a short video clip of the workshop here.

A BOOK TALK ON 'ART SPARKS: IDEAS. METHODS. PROCESS.' - NOV. 8, 2020

We had an interactive discussion about the book ‘Art Sparks: Ideas. Methods. Process.’ , written by Nisha Nair, our Founder & Executive Director. Through this book, Nisha makes a strong case about the essential role the visual arts play in a child’s learning, growth and development. Exploring these questions seriously for the first time in the Indian educational context, this book guides the interested adult through an engaging and uniquely successful process of art-making with children.

We were joined by Nisha Nair, V.Geetha, Editorial Director at Tara Books and Nagarathna, ArtSparks' facilitator at Adarsha Vidhya Samsthe (AVS School), Addagal. During the discussion, we had some interesting conversations around how this book came to be and its importance in the current Indian educational context.

NURTURING CURIOSITY THROUGH INVESTIGATION - AUG. 29, 2020
Curiosity drives learning. Nurturing children's natural curiosity, and helping sustain this curiosity over the long run should be the goal of education. Yet, much of our education system is built on an approach of passing on information and telling. Art-based approaches, built on a foundation of inquiry and investigation, can help reclaim and foster children's curiosity. This session provided participants with a hands-on opportunity to engage with inquiry and investigation as they discovered their own capacity to remain curious. Implications for children's learning were discussed.
FOSTERING IMAGINATION THROUGH ART - AUG. 15, 2020

Not all art experiences are designed to foster imagination in children. Some art experiences can instead stifle children's imaginative capacities. As educators and art educators, it is important to be able to distinguish between the two, and design learning experiences that are conducive to nurturing imagination. This session provided participants with a hands-on opportunity to engage with two distinct art experiences, and determine for themselves which of the two fostered imagination, and why.
