Art & 21st Century Learning - Impact Assessment Study
About the Study
This qualitative case study, emerging from a partnership with Wipro Foundation, in conjunction with Azim Premji Foundation and The Urban School Project, aims to lay bare manifestations of the development of 21st century learning skills such as Investigation and Problem-Solving, as well as a number of life skills in a group of children that participated in a 12-week art program modeled after ArtSparks’ more extensive Creative Learning Lab program. This study also aims to bring to light the factors associated with robust art programming that contribute to the development of these skills in children in clear and measurable ways.

Key Findings
Through their participation in the program, students demonstrated:
  • Growth in Investigation skills, demonstrated through an increased capacity to (i) test materials with curiosity, (ii) experiment with intentionality, and (iii) ask questions with an intent to learn.
  • Growth in Problem-Solving skills, demonstrated through an increased capacity to
    (i) encounter and analyze artistic problems, (ii) generate multiple ideas and solutions,
(iii) evaluate solutions and make choices.
  • Growth in Emotional Regulation capacities such as managing frustrations, reducing altercations, collaborating, discussing, sharing resources and inputs, and more.
  • Increased Engagement & Focus resulting in a sharp reduction of distractions and disruptions.
  • Increased Self-Reliant behaviours, demonstrated through a sharp reduction in uncertainty, copying from others, seeking validation from the facilitator, needing to be given the "right" answer, etc.
  • Growth in Interpersonal & Communication skills, evidenced through significant improvements in collaboration with their peers, sharing resources, displaying patience, supporting one another, staying open to others perspectives, and more.
